what is needed to have a universal address book?

i am using an IMAP e-mail server and i like the fact that the e-mails stay on the server so i can access them anyplace i go as long as i can setup a client to access my account/server.

please bare with me as im ubb3r new to linux and even to this level of servrs, most of my experiance comes from local small LANs on win2k domains, and i did not setup and configure the linux server on my own. i can get more info, but here is what i know as fact.

Whitebox 3
Apache2
hord (IIRC this is the web access for e-mail)
Qmail (i think this is what is setup, how can i verify as it is set to custom directories under root)

do i need to have LDAP configured in order to have a universal address book for the e-mail so it will also travle with all of the accounts it is attached too in addition to the emails that stay on the server?

or is there something else that i need to do. i would also like to set it up so that more then one account can access the same address book.

Thanks for the help and or guidance.

For shared contacts, you need LDAP. There used to be a nice program written in PHP, that would run in Apache, and allowed users to each access their own contacts, AND shared contacts. It does not work with modern distros... So you'll have to administer the LDAP database yourself (as administrator), or find an program that will let users easily administer the contacts themselves. Please let us know of what you find!

Yves.
