Does M-` work for you? That's the default I think.

Thanks for reply.

If M- means meta key on its own, then no, nothing happens. I've not used emacs before, so maybe I'm supposed to do something after M-.

I also tried :

M-x global-set-key <RET> F10 menu-bar-open

After this, F10 should bring up the menu ? Nothing happens.

thanks.

I meant press Meta (or Alt), followed by the backtick key (or whatever its called.. the one above tab on the keyboard).
I tried M-x global-set-key <RET> F10 tmm-menubar on my emacs, and that works perfectly for me too

Okay, thanks. It doesn't work. Maybe it's my version of emacs. I'll have to play around a bit.

You are using GNU emacs aren't you? I don't see why the binding should be any different (unless its an old version or something). Try starting emacs with the -q argument, it will ignore all customizations in .emacs and start with the default settings.
Also try M-x describe-function RET tmm-menubar and see if a binding is mentioned in line 2. Mine says this:
Code:
tmm-menubar is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `tmm.el'.
It is bound to M-`.
(tmm-menubar &optional x-position)

Text-mode emulation of looking and choosing from a menubar.
See the documentation for `tmm-prompt'.
x-position, if non-nil, specifies a horizontal position within the menu bar;
we make that menu bar item (the one at that position) the default choice.

[back]
Also try M-x where-is RET tmm-menubar, it should show you what key it is bound to.

Actually, I'm using xemacs. I wouldn't have thought that it would make any difference, but....

I could try GNU emacs.

I wanted to use Emacs Speaks Statistics and from what I read xemacs seemed more appropriate, but..
