What does a recursive install mean?

I'm using Slackware and I keep bumping into recursive install messages that keep me from compiling the programs I want to compile. What is a recursive install error, and what can I do to fix the stupid things?

What exactly do you mean?

"You cannot install x package as x package is not installed" ?

What is it you are trying to install?

I'm trying to install linc-1.0.3 on Slackware 12.0. I have also run into this problem trying to install ddd.
