What do I need for system recovery?

Please bump this to another category if needed, I wasn't sure where to ask this question.

I currently have tomsrtbt and Knoppix 3.3 on hand in case of a catastrophe. Are these the right things to have on hand or is there something else I should have?

For a smal system, a DVD-writer can be sufficient and is a lot less expensive than a tape drive.
