The only thing right now holding me back from going completely Windows-free is not being able to find a Linux app that would allow me to make VCD's out of jpegs and mp3 soundtracks. Windows Movie Maker 2 is what I use now, and have dabbled a bit with various other apps.
Your suggestions would be appreciated.
You asked what compares to it, well I tend to compare it to a piece of steamy crap. :-D
No matter my opinion of it, though, have you tried Windows-emulator programs such as WINE and WINEx? I have seen Windows-intergreated programs such as Internet Explorer 6 SP1 running on Linux, so perhaps with a bit of work, Windows Movie Maker could also be run in Linux.
