what's difference between 75 dpi and 100 dpi fonts?

Is there any difference between 75 and 100 dpi fonts and how can i use the 100 dpi wants (i think they're 96 dpi w/in xp). currently, my gimp is set for 75 dpi i think. does a xga screen qualify for 100 dpi?
