what's the deal with xmms?
 

I got some message saying it no longer supports playing mp3 files, now i can't play my mp3s. does anyone know whats going on, or an alternative prog i can use?

Sure thing man :). Redhat has been having problems(?) with mp3's plugins since 8.0(?) I think. It's a simple matter of downloading this plugin:

Always check out http://rpmfind.net/, you most liked will find what you need there :)
You could also try some command line players, as mpg123, mpg321, mplayer :)

i realized i use mplayer for video...didn't know it made a nifty mp3 player as well. is it pretty easy to configure? i'd love to use it for streaming mp3s. if you can point me to some docs or HOWTOs that'd be much appreciated.

this may not be news to the rest of you, but redhat/fedora does not include mp3 support b/c it is a proprietary format. Meaning somebody owns the way music is encoded when encoded as an mp3. If at all possible the OSS format Ogg Vorbis should be utilized,. Having said that I will add that I *ALWAYS * add mp3 support b/c most of the world thinks that mp3 is the be all end all for music protocols.

I dunno if you have to do something special to play mp3 with mplayer, but it runs out of the box for me. At the console, type:

mplayer yourmusic.mp3

simple as that. You may want to add options as mplayer yourmusic.mp3 -loop 200, so it will loop your song for 200 times :).

BigNate has a good point too. A good while back I was trying to make a game in DirectX. It was going pretty well. It's just amazing the amount of formats that are copyrighted and not allowed to use widely, as gif and mp3. Mp3 can be used commercially in a game, but you've to pay fees to the owners depending of the amount of games sold. Lame... I know it's hard to make some compressed archives as gif and mp3... but it's still lame. Although, I see no harm for personal use :).

To play ogg, you've to install ogg oss. It has been quite a long time since I last installed Redhat, but I know that slackware has an option to install ogg during the installation. There might be some mp3_to_ogg program for Linux, but I don't know any. For Windows, there're many, simply type at the google :).

By the other hand, and in my very poor experience, xine+audigy sndcard + 5.1 system works, believe me, very impressive!!! I didn't know that my mp3 files could sound so beautifulll!!!
