What's the best Desktop Environment?
Hi there!
I'm running a Dual Xeon (450Mhz) with a GeForce 4 MX (256mb) graphics card and I've installed Slackware 10.1 I've ripped down (as far as that's possible) the minimal distro and started from scratch to: 1) rebuild my kernel 2) setup a Lilo Dual Boot (WinXp Pro) 3) install swaret, dhcpcd, HomeLanSecurity, ... = 'internet shit' Now I've come to the part where I want to install XFree86, FluxBox and last of all, a desktop environment As you can see, I'm quite a control-freak, I want to know exactly what's installed and what's not installed. So my question is logicaly: What's the best (meaning easiest to install, setup and change later on) desktop environment for a fairly lightweight system? |
Fluxbox is a Window Manager - a Desktop Environment (KDE/Gnome) is a lot more full featured and thus heavier. Just install the libraries and stick with Fluxbox.

Fluxbox is technically a windows manager, but you can get it to do pretty much all of what you'd need from a DE like gnome or kde. plus it's easy to tweak and lightweight. or you could go for blackbox, enlightenment, window maker which are also minimal.
