What's the best audio player?
 

I use xmms right now, and I really can't stand it. It makes it difficult to search through my collection of mp3s, it has really poor sound quality, and half the time I get a little error message saying it can't play a song - and then it plays the song right away when I click the "play" button. Any suggestions for a better player?

Maybe you need to go through the preferences and configure away. I find it's very nice. You can try xine or mplayer though.

I too prefer xmms, it's a good player. And are you sure it's the mp3 player that has bad sound quality and not your mp3, driver (compatibility with your hardware), or your hardware itself

If you really want to change your player, you might consider mPlayer.

Did you enable mp3 playback in RedHat (by adding the MP3 plugin)? RedHat does not allow playback of MP3s or DVDs by default.

Are you using the right output plugin for XMMS? It defaults to "auto" which tends to suck if it plays at all-- using either the ALSA or OSS plugins (depending on what driver your sound card is using), or even the aRTs or eSound plugins (if using KDE or GNOME sound servers, respectively) usually give better results.

xmms is a nice player. it suits all my needs. maybe the bad sound quality is just ur sound drivers not being configured right. gettin some scratchy sounds?

Drop your PCM mixer value to ~90%. You are probably getting a little clipping. Then, right click on the main window, options-->preferences. Effects plugins-->Extra stereo. Enable @2.5, see if you like the way that sounds. That is my default. On the other, I like

You can also try juk, a KDE app. I like it, but can't seem to get around not having extra stereo enabled. :)

well if u want media management, then u can try rhythmbox or Juk (comes with kde 3.2 *i think)
