Angry WGET error

I'm using wget to create backups of a website.
But, when trying to FTP through my proxy to the internet I get this error
ERROR -1: Malformed status line.
I can retrieve files through the proxy over http just fine.
Any ideas anyone? All help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hmmm ... are you telling wget it is ftp you're
doing? Tried --passive-ftp? Is your proxy also
a firewall?

Cheers,
Tink

yes I am using passive ftp and I did put ftp:// before the server address

My firewall is already setup to allow FTP connections to this particular server
