Angry Weird tex troubles

Hello everybody

I've installed tex Version 3.14159 (Web2C 7.4.5) on my suse box (from the tetex package). If I run tex with my source file it gives me the following error message:
! Undefined control sequence.
l.8 \documentclass
[a5paper,10pt,twoside]{book}
the command was
\documentclass[a5paper,10pt,twoside]{book}
if i write
\documentclass{book}
in my source file, the result is the same. Also with {article}. If I comment the line with
%\documentclass
the error message just hops to the next line now saying that i've got an:
! Undefined control sequence.
l.9 \usepackage
{ngerman}
The package ngerman is installed (says my package description, how to test?).
I think these errors are really weird, because the commands are just basic tex and because tex is starting and reading my source properly. Has anybody any idea what kind of problem i am experiencing?

Thanx for any help

Have you tried running latex instead of tex?
