Weird Shutdown Problem

Ok, I'm using Gnome and GDM as my login manager. When I try to reboot my computer as my user account, it goes to the GDM and sits there. If I'm root, it will go to the GDM screen, then reboot after some time. How an I make it so I can shutdown without telling my GDM to do it.
