Weird KDE Crash

Hi,

Yesterday my computer started going very slowly, and I ended up having to Crtl+Alt+F2 to do a reboot.
When it booted back up I logged in to KDE but the plasma desktop and the taskbar/menu/systray are not working.
Luckily I have several apps that autostart, including a Konsole. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to run any other programs (Alt+F2 doesn't work either).

I have no idea why.
I tried moving the ~/.kde folder out of the way. But that just gave me a black screen when I logged into KDE.

Anyone got any ideas of how I can rescue my system?

Thanks

So I've removed kde
sudo apt-get purge kdelib5

then reinstalled

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

and it's made no difference whatsoever.

Any ideas?
Please?

Have you done anything with your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file recently? This sounds like it may not be related to KDE but more related to graphics settings.

Try running the following command in Konsole:

Code:
sudo Xorg -configure
This will reconfigure your X.org server from scratch.

Or, if you have an ATI card:

Code:
sudo aticonfig --initial -f

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

No I haven't changed the Xorg.conf but I have been running upgrades so I suppose something could have changed via that.

Gnome is working fine, however, I'm not really that familiar with it though.
Could it still be an X problem if Gnome is working ok.

Should I still run the Xorg reconfigure?

Thanks

If GNOME is working fine, it's got to be a KDE-related problem. You might want to try setting up a new user account and seeing if that account has the same problem. If the new account is ok, you'll know it's something in a config file in your home directory. If KDE doesn't work in the new account doesn't work either, it's one of the KDE packages
