Weird K3B Error; Won't Properly Write to CD-RW Discs
I was going to bring copy of the Linux kernel to a friend, so I wanted to burn it onto a CD-RW disc, as opposed to a CD-R, so I could reuse it. After burning it onto the disc, I tried copying the kernel off of the disc to the hard drive. It wouldn't work; near the end of the transfer it "stalled." I erased the disc and tried again, this time with data verification checked. The writing, it said, went fine, but when it verified it failed. I tried this another time with a brand new CD-RW, just to make sure the disc wasn't bad, and it still didn't work. I have dual-boot with Windows, so I tried writing to the discs with a program in Windows. This worked fine. Then I tried writing the kernel using a CD-R (instead of a CD-RW) and it the burning went without a hitch. The verification was successful, and I could copy the files off of the CD.
So, it seems that the K3B has a problem only with rewritable discs, and not simply recordable ones. If this info is of any help, the CD-RW discs were only 4X while the CD-Rs are 16X (my drive can burn up to 16X). The rewritables were also 700 MB (some are 650 MB). Does anyone have any idea why this happens? Thanks.
hello
i had the same problem using k3b. but later on found out it was the rewriteable disk, which was used for too many times. you can try writing multiple copies of the files.
I would guess there are either 2 things that might be the culprit -- you are burning at too fast of a speed with the RW, or the RW disk itself is defective (or too low quality). Have you tried burning the CD-RW at 1X or 2X only, nevermind the 4X rating on the blank or the 16X rating on the CD. If even slow burns fail to provide satisfactory results, but regular CD-R's do work properly, could it be the the CD-RW blank is some no-name, mystery brand while the CD-R blank is a well known, quality brand like TDK, Maxell, etc? If so, have you tried using a quality CD-RW blank? That could easily make a major difference. -- J.W.
I know that the error doesn't occur because the discs have seen too much use; I tried it with a brand new one. I also tried the burning at 2X speed and it still failed. The CD-Rs are from KHypermedia. They are rated to burn at 48X, even though I can only burn at 16X. The rewritables are rated at "2X-4X" and are made by Verbatim (not a well known brand). Nevertheless, I have a hard time believing it's the discs' fault because they are brand new and they work just fine in Windows.
Having problems myself. Did some config on k3b and later discovered CDRW lost it's automount.
Not erasing 650 mb CDRW's unless force checked.
Trying out K3B, really flaky lately on 350 mhz k2-350 Mand 10.0 official Celeron 2.4 Ubuddy Mandrake 10.0 and xcdroast no problems. Might just start going to use cdrecord on console.
While I haven't figured out what's wrong with K3B, I know that it's K3B, and not cdrecord, the command line utility that it presumably relies on, that has the problem. I tried using GNOME's burning tool, and it worked just fine. Very strange. There's probably some configuration in K3B that's messed up so it's passing incorrect instructions to cdrecord.
