Weird FTP problem

Trying to upload some files to my provider is a nightmare on linux (debian) For some reason it takes ages to connect and switching dirs can take minutes.
Switching to win and using ws_ftp makes it go in a flash. I've tried several clients but the one that at least connects after a long time is kbear (a kde ftp thingy).
What could be the problem? I hate to go to win to just upload some files......

are you using passive mode? or active mode?
some servers are very particular...

May I suggest Gftp or Filerunner. Both are graphical.

PS.
You have to go to the gftp website to get the latest stable version. For some reason it's not in the repos yet.
