Web Server not accessible

I have been trying to make a web server accessible from the internet for a while now and it just isn't working. I have read everything I can find and everything appears to be correct, but no joy. Here's what I got:

OS: Xandros Desktop Version 2 (Open Circulation)

Webserver: Apache 1.3 (This line shows in the log - Apache/1.3.27 (Unix) Debian GNU/Linux configured)

Router: Netgear FVS318

DNS: DynDNS.org (croaker.homelinux.com)

Below is a copy of my Apache configuration file. As you can see it is almost a default configuration. One of the things added was a LISTEN directive so that the server listens on both Port 80 and Port 8080. The router is setup to forward both ports to the machine running the server (using a static IP address). If someone outside of my LAN attempts to connect without specifying a Port number (which I believe defaults to Port 80) or by adding the :80 to the end of the address they get a message saying that the server can not be found. If they try to connect using the same address but adding
:8080 so they go through the alternate port everything works fine.

I have spoken to my ISP (Earthlink) and they assure me that they are not blocking unsolicited requests on Port 80. I spoke with Netgear support and they say that the router is setup fine. Since the web server responds on port 8080 I have to believe that the configuration is, at lease, acceptable. The last thing that I found was that if the server was running on a port less than 1024 than the server had to be started by "root". I had the server set to activate during startup which I believed meant that it would be started by "root", but to make sure I started a console, su'd to "root" and then issued the commands 'apachectl stop' and 'apachectl start'. I again tried connecting without the port specified from the address line and failed.

Has anyone else seen this problem or have any idea how I can correct it? I would really like my group to be able to connect to the server without adding the port number.

Thanks,
Croaker.

Lightbulb ? alternative

Hi. I do not have much experience with Apache... I have however found that although feature rich, it is often overkill.
If possible I would point you to the abyss webserver http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/ It'll do everything you need and is so much easier to configure vs. apache. It requires almost no preparation to get it up and running (on 80 or whatever other ports you wish
cheers
