Wanadoo Broadband

Hi,
Am new member. My PC is dual-boot. Windows XP and Linux. I have
subscribed to Wanadoo Broadband and have a silver Speedtouch 330
modem. All works fine in Windows but am having problems setting up in Linux. I have read previous thread related to Wandoo but haven't found my problem.

Under Windows :
1. I have gone to speedtouchcong.sourceforge.net website and printed off instructions for Linux configuration of USB Modem
2. I have downloaded speedtouchconf-2.0-beta1_12-Mar-2005.tar.gz
3. I went to Alcatel Microcode Download page and, via 'Binary', downloaded file KQD6_R204.zip
4. I also, although not sure required, downloaded rev4fw.zip which relates to Silver modem (mine is a silver Speedtouch 330)

I put files on to floppy and logged in as Root to Linux. I copied from floppy the speedtouchconf file and then extracted files via

tar xzvf

This produced, at end of procedure, an error message :

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

I ignored this message and went to the created speedtouch directory and

1. from floppy copied the KQD6_R204.zip file
2. entered command ./speedtouchconf.sh
3. entered my VPI/VCI numbers, Wanadoo ID and Password

and had FAILURE on activating software. I looked at the related speedtouch.config.txt file and failure message was :

configure: error: cannot find sources (AUTHORS) in . or ..

I tried procedure again using the rev4fw.zip (silver modem) file with same result.

Questions:

1. Is my problem related to the error related to 'tar xzvf' ?
2. Am confused about which Microcode to use ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Whew .... that was long

Cheers
John

to decompress the files you need something like:
1. speedtouchconf-2.0-beta1_12-Mar-2005.tar.gz
tar -zxpf speedtouchconf-2.0-beta1_12-Mar-2005.tar.gz
2. KQD6_R204.zip
unzip KQD6_R204.zip

any errors probably mean a failed download .... ie. try again!

note:
I have no idea about Wanadoo Broadband or Speedtouch 330 modems.

I have a dual usb/ethernet modem which I run as ethernet only
(and just to make that more complicated it's in half bridged mode)

Many thanks for comments Ubernut.

for decompressing file I have used the Speedtouch suggested instruction 'tar xzvf speedtouchconf etc@ and that produced the error message.

for the microcode, the Speedtouch instructions for the the Silver modem specifically state 'Do not unzip file' and I assumed that this was also true for the KQD6_R204.zip file. May not be correct asumption though. Will try unzipping.

It just occurred to me that problem 'may' be related to version of linux that I have. It is

Scientific Linux SL Release 3.0.3

perhaps the zipped file is supposed to remain zipped for the microcode update?

reading the howtos should help there, perhaps?
