vsftpd on SuSE 8, permission problems

Hi everyone, I've searched for this problem for a while now and wasn't able to find anything that could help me, so sorry if this is replicating a previous thread.

I didn't want it to come to this, but here I am asking for help..

On the machine running vsftpd, I can login locally through Konsole but that's it, if I try any commands (ls, dir) I get a 550 error, permission denied. This happens using both my own config and one of the examples supplied (not using inetd). I have checked the permissions of the home directory that I am connecting to and appear to have complete access to the folder.
I have looked through my config file a million times, I went through every command line and changing/removing it to see if that was the problem, now I'm just really stuck!

Thanks in advance for any help, J.
