Exclamation VSFTPD Debian VSFTPD "unrecognised variable in config file"

I just installed Debian 3.0r2, used apt-get to install vsftpd, grabbed the config file from my Mandrake machine that I know works, fine tuned it for the Debian box, and I get:
"500 OOPS: unrecognized variable in config file" when I run vsftpd. I have checked every directive against the vsftpd man on the Debian box, and they all check out ok, spelling and all...

Anyone else have this problem?? It's killing me...

thanks,
DCT
