My son and I have been trying to get VSFTPD (v1.2.2 from a tarball) working on Mandrake Linux 9.2 RC2. We cannot get it to run for the life of us. We have followed all the suggestions found on this site and on others. None of them have helped.

We are trying to run it out of xinetd. Everytime we do this, we get a bunch of different errors. The current one is "500 OOPS: could not bind listening IPv4 socket". We have the Listen=YES. We have followed all the instructions at "vsftpdrocks.org".

I have read that xinetd can have control over port 21 but I do not know how to configure it.

Can anybody give us a new starting point? We want to stay with VSFTPD because it seems to be the most secure.

Hello!
Just remove (or comment) the line:
listen=YES

This is only used when running vfstpd in standalone mode.
If you are using Xinetd, this line should be removed.
