vsftp encryped login/communication?

Does vsftp support encrypted login/ and or communication? I've googled around but haven't come up with anything...

If it is not- is there a popular ftp server that does use encryption?

use sftp, since, by definition ftp is unencrypted

if you don't have ssh server and ssh clients installed, do so

then get winscp for windows (search on sourceforge.net) and use the sftp or scp command on your linux box.

Hello,

I was wondering the same thing about VSFTP. In its name it means, very secure, but does this mean the connection is encrypted between the remote host and the server??? Anyone know the answer to this question?? Thank you.

FTP is never encrypted.

Use sftp (that uses sshd, the same server as ssh) to do the same stuff with encryption. Or make it go through an encrypted tunnel.

Okay, thanks. So what does VSFTP mean???? I thought it means Very Secure File Transfer Protocol?? What the heck does that mean if it's not a secure connection??

a ftp server can be secure or insecure just as a mailer or other program can be secure or insecure. This one claims to be very secure.

Ahh, so I would have to make it secure, it isn't just because it says it supports it, correct?

what you must know is that "secure" doesn't necessarely imply "encrypted"

Secure: hard to make it do things it is not supposed to do, in a server context.

What you are talking about (encryption), is securing a protocol.
If vsftp is a ftp server, the ftp protocol itself is not encrypted. Having an encrypted ftp server would not really be a standard Ftp server.
