VOIP softphone can't hear what i say into the mic

Except for Skype, VOIP SIP softphones don't hear what i say into my mic. When I call sip:500 ekiga net, which is the echo test, I can hear the lady's
voice, but I cannot hear my own voice being played back (being echoed) back to me.

I know that my headset is working fine, because the headset works fine in skype.

This problem started only a few weeks ago. Before that, ekiga used to work fine .

I have also tried twinkle.

I am using Ubuntu on gnome.

Restarting the computer doesn't help. Uninstalling and then reinstalling ekiga doesn't help.

Please help.

I was glad to find that Skype was installed on Mepis6, but I can't get it to work. It starts to work, and once got me all the way through the "echo123" routine, but then it gives me an error message saying that the sound configuration is wrong.

Can anyone tell me how to get it straightened out, or even where to start. I'm really new to Linux.
