My company has asked me to implement a VOIP solution for internal use (only within the company WAN). Feature wish-list are as follows:
1. voice conference for upto 10 persons at a time
2. video conference (optional)
3. should support connection from PC/laptop (no hardware phone would be used)
4. user accounts should reside on the server so that anyone can just log in and call anyone else (just like Skype)
Distribution: Debian and Fedora Core in equal measure

Fair enough...I personally rate Asterisk, having deployed it on a real network. I have no other practical knowledge of Open Source PABXs, but googling "linux pabx" gave me pages of hits....in which http://sipx-wiki.calivia.com/index.php/Main_Page looks good...I may try it myself...BTW what was it about Asterisk that didn't meet your needs?
Anyway, I will try sipX as I am still in the R&D stage. Thanks.
BTW, can you please recommend any softphone (preferably open source and runs on Windows) that can handle conferencing up to 6 persons at a time? I found some from this page though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SIP_software
