VNC incredibly slow (SuSE)

Any tips on speeding up VNC for remote access on a SuSE box? It seems to have this bad habit of redrawing the background even when it doesn't need it. What's worse is that it completely repaints it each time. I have a solid color background and it's only marginally faster than the default "complex" background!

Application windows refresh very quickly as long as one doesn't end up exposing the background and causing a painful background refresh!

Not a problem on the LAN (10mbps), but across a VPN into a limited upstream data rate location (512kbps) it's a HUGE issue (takes 1-2 minutes to refresh the background, and during that time all you can do is sit and watch).

Aren't there options to change the refresh rate in VNC? Find out.

You should check out freenx, it is based on nomachines nx technology. Very smart and very fast.
