VNC grey screen

This has been bugging for nearly a day.

I have googl'd this and read 100's of different threads about this and keeps bringing me back to the same answer...

I have tried editing the xstartup file so many times (as that appears to be the probelm) to what people said fixed the grey screen but I seem to keep getting a grey screen no matter what.

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me in remote assistance and try this themselves as I'm new to linux so I'm probably missing something stupid.

If anyone wouldn't mind helping me with it in remote assistance I would be ever so grateful please reply if wouldn't mind helping and leave your msn/aim so I could contact you.

Thanks.

I doubt anyone will be contacting you via msn/aim, since this isn't a one-on-one, personal tech-support site. This is community based...knowledge is shared, in public, so all can benefit.

And you may want to say WHAT you edited, on which version/distro of Linux, so we don't cover the same ground 50 times, and tell us where you're trying to VNC in FROM, and what messages you're seeing in your X logs.

I would guess that your .vnc/xstartup file isn't starting a window manager.

It needs a line like:

twm&
or
gnome-session &

or something.
