vmware - reading xp disk

I'm trying to install xp on vmware workstation. It seems pretty easy but when I run the virtual server to start installing xp, it cannot find the xp disk. I have 2 cdroms, the cd automounts when i inset it. Also, I can browse the disk just fine. Why won't it read?

VMware creates a normal computer, so you have to adjust the BOOT order to make one of the CD drives bootable. Usually Master devices are the only ones can be bootable on a Pheonix Award BIOS.

I suggest edit /etc/fstab file to remove supermount or anything similar to it for your CD-ROM drives.

while i don't see anything that would tell me supermount is in the cdrom lines of fstab, I also don't know exactly what supermount is. Here are my cdrom lines in fstab:
Code:
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
The actual error says that no boot filename was received.

Re: vmware - reading xp disk

Try setting the cd drive to "legacy emulation" in the VMware machine settings.

I get this problem a lot especially after setting up a new VM machine and then wonder why it's looking for a net boot

found a workaround for anyone that might be instereested in the future. If you copy the cd to an iso file and point the cdrom in vmware workstation to that iso, it will read.

Sorry, I've not tried this with Slackware but give it a go. Nothing to lose and the basics should be similar to my Suse & Ubuntu setups.

Just tick the legacy box on the CD/DVD VM setup page.
