Been a while since installing VMware but two things need to be done on Fedora/Redhat Distros. First you need the kernel source installed. To see if you have them run these commands and post output.
uname -r
rpm -qa | grep kernel
Now you need to have a matching rpms for kernel and kernel-devel. If you do not have the kernel-devel-**.rpm installed and still using the default installed kernel from day one then it is on the CD/dvd you used. Run this command as root once you locate the rpm on the cd/dvd.
rpm -ivh kernel-devel*.rpm
If you have updated the precompiled kernel then you need to goto where you got the new kernel rpm and get the kernel-devel********.rpm from there and download and install. If using yum or apt/synaptic then it should be able to install it for you.
Next item needed is the latest vmware-any-any-update from here.
http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/
Extract the contents and as root run this command from the extracted directory.
./runme.pl
This is described in the readme or install docs from the package. Read completely to verify other requirements.
Now once the runme.pl starts it will then start the vmware-config.pl from that and you complete the needed configuration for what you need the vmware app to use.
If you upgrade the kernel you will need to check for a new vmware-any-any-update tool and rerun the the ./runme.pl script. Remember vmware use modules that are built based only on the kernel it is compiled for. Module from 2.6.17 kernel will only work on a 2.6.17 kernel.
