Post vmware 4.5 & esddsp ->anyone get this working?

Greetings.

I am running VMWare workstation 4.5 on Redhat 8.0 with significant enhancement of many packages to the Fedora level. My sound card is the i810 chipset driven by the ESS drivers, which works great. If I don't run esd, sound in VMWare is fine, and I can play CD using the gnome-cd player. If I open XMMS or other sound applications, they take /dev/dsp and VMWare reports that it cannot reach the sound device (it is configured to use /dev/dsp in the guest OS).

Documentation at the VMWare site says that running "esddsp vmware &" should allow esd to virtualize the VMWare calls to /dev/dsp, and stream those calls through esd, allowing multiplexing of the sound device. When I try this, it looks like it everything is working properly, but VMWare reports that it cannot find the sound device. What am I doing wrong? I make no claim to being a genius but it would seem I have all of the correct peices in place. Any help would be sincerely appreciated.
