vlc won't play dvd's
I have installed both free and non-free fusion repositories. I have installed libdvdcss, libdvdnav, and libdvdread. I can play audio cd's in either the dvd player or burner. vlc or mplayer won't play dvd's. File manager won't detect either dvd drive with dvd media in it.
Brasero will burn a dvd or cd iso file. I used chmod 666 on both drives. I created a mount directory for both drives. I am running fedora 23. When it came out I upgraded from version 21. I was able to play dvd's with fedora 21. |
|
I have already followed the instructions to load the free and non-free rpm fusion repositories. I installed the gstreamer1 plugins, and the rhymbox software.
mplayer will play the dvd movie, but vlc does not play or give an error message. |
I haven't bothered playing a DVD in a long time, but you probably also need to install libdvdcss http://www.videolan.org/developers/libdvdcss.html
EDIT: I scrolled further up, and see you already did that. How are you pointing vlc to the drive to find the disc to play? |
I am pointing vlc to dev/dvd for the dvd burner and dev/cdrom for the dvd/cdrom player. This is by using the disk menu under file.
I tried making a mount directory for both drives and creating a symbolic link which was mentioned in an older post on linuxquestions.org. |
try /dev/sr0 (or /dev/sr1 if you have 2 drives).
btw, this: Quote:
|
vlc menu shows sg1 drive regardless of which drive I select in the disc menu. I tried to select either /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1.
mplayer shows error message: Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd (No medium found). The preferences option only allows you to select /dev/dvd for media. |

post what it gives. |
Seriously, Tlcoons. I think we need a little more info.
I just played a DVD using VLC 2.2.3 in an up-to-date Fedora 23. For many builds now, the only thing I've had to do to get it to play dvds is install libdvdcss. I'll say this, though. Things have changed drastically with KDE's device notifier. Prior to the KDE 5, I used to be able to select any one of the available media players and eject the disk from the task bar. This is no longer true. Now I have to bring up the media player first, which leads to the complications you described. ( /dev/dvd, /dev/sr1, /dev/sg2... it gets confusing quickly). Now you have to get a bit familiar with the media player and find one you're comfortable with. |

there's nothing of interest in that output.
however, it does seem to recognize dvd:///dev/cdrom. but nothing more. it never seems to get to the point of actually reading the disk. no, without additional info there's nothing i can do. try other media players (and if they don't play, post some output/info/warnings). btw, this happen with all dvds or just one? burned ones or bought? (and many more questions to be answered...) ps: is everything else working fine on your upgraded fedora? |
I tried a purchased dvd and file manager finds it. When I try mplayer, I get the following error message:
Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd (No such file or directory) I selected /dev/dvd in mplayer preferences. It is the only device that shows up in the default device dropdown menu. I can play audio book cd's and music cd's. File manager detects both types. Burned music cd's play as well. I don't have any burned dvd movies. Everything else seams to be working fine. I have upgraded to the latest fixes. |
well try all the other options as well: /dev/cdrom, /dev/sr0, /dev/sr1...
