Hi all, I'm using Slackware current, Firefox 6 and VLC 1.1.11 (I used AlienBob's SlackBuild, if that's significant), and any time I try to open a multimedia file in Firefox the browser crashes. To test this, I removed the plugin and tried to open the file, whereupon I got a download dialogue. Here is my about: plugins page:

I've seen on an FAQ (either Mozilla's or VLC's, can't remember which) that WMV will sometimes crash the plugin, but I've tried a few types, including mp3, Ogg Vorbis, mp4 video, &c. Anybody have any insight on this?
I had hoped that the command I posted might shows some kind of "in your face!" kind of error. Either way, I checked what I had on my box
Now, I am not running slackware, but I am running Firefox 6. I noticed a version gap between out two installs:
Code:
VLC Multimedia Plugin (compatible Totem 2.30.2)
File: libtotem-cone-plugin.so

Wonder if that might have something to do with it. A small version difference is not that big of a deal; however, a big difference I think could be a problem. Have you tailed /var/log/messages or possibly /var/log/daemon.log ( not sure if slackware has a daemon.log ).
After looking around I think your issue is the version of the vlc plug your using. The 1.1.* series seems to have been preferred for Firefox 3.6. Can you try building the newer version or perhaps try using the totem replacement plug? Seems that it might be worth the effort to try trouble shooting it.
FWIW I get the vlc-plugin from gecko-mediaplayer as shown by about: plugins
Code:
mplayerplug-in is now gecko-mediaplayer 0.9.9.2
File: gecko-mediaplayer.so
Version:

I don't experience any problems with this setup.
ciao,

jdkaye, I tried installing the gecko-mediaplayer plugin and Firefox just immediately crashed on startup.
mrmnemo, as far as I can see, VLC 1.1.11 is the latest version out there. As far as getting Totem to run on a Gnome-less system - more trouble than it's worth, I think. I'm going to keep plugging away at this (rimshot) and get back to you.
--EDIT--
I suspected something wasn't right with the gecko-mediaplayer plugin, and it turns out I hadn't configured both mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer to use GConf. Once I did that, all was well. Thanks for your help, guys.

I assume you removed the VLC plugin before installing gecko. Correct? Try running FFx from the command line and see what error messages it gives when it crashes.

I did remove the VLC plugin, yeah. Then I remembered that I had compiled mplayer with GConf support and then gecko-mediaplayer without it, so that's why it crashed. So I recompiled gecko-mediaplayer with GConf support and now it runs like a dream.
