VLC Player crashes when asked to play

i using Fedora core 5. I tried installing VLC player. and i was able to install it with all required dependencies. first i tried with version 0.8.4a-4 then with 0.8.5-1. both the times i was able to install. but when ever i open a file via File -> open. the file open dialog comes. after choosing the file, when i press ok, VLC crashes. i unable to open any media file with vlc. please help me.

i also giving the error message which vlc threw at me.

with version 0.8.4a-4

VLC media player 0.8.4a Janus
vlc: pcm_plug.c:384: snd_pcm_plug_change_channels: Assertion `snd_pcm_format_linear(slv->format)' failed.
Aborted

with version 0.8.5-1

VLC media player 0.8.5 Janus
starting VLC root wrapper... using UID 0 (root)
***************************************
* Running VLC as root is discouraged. *
***************************************

It is potentially dangerous, and might not even work properly.
vlc: pcm_plug.c:384: snd_pcm_plug_change_channels: Assertion `snd_pcm_format_linear(slv->format)' failed.
Aborted

how to solve this problem?

shot in the dark, but it looks like vlc is having difficulty with your sound settings.

go into settings>preferences>audio>output modules>make sure 'advanced options' is checked, and change it from default to whatever sound software you're using (alsa, oss, etc.)

no guarantees....

cheers,

I donīt know. i just kept changing from one thing to other in the sound settings, and when i choose OSS i was able to hear sound. not with anything else. even ALSA was present there. it was the default choosen one.

What is ALSA?
Is it better than OSS?
If i want to use ALSA then what do i have to do?

Alsa is the successor of OSS.
In my computer alsa work better than OSS.
If OSS is still work for you, it's OK but I think that when you upgrade you computer, it won't.
I don't use VLC indeed so I don't know if it support alsa but if you prefer alsa you can use mplayer or xine, they both well support alsa and have many codecs to play almost all type of media file
