shot in the dark, but it looks like vlc is having difficulty with your sound settings.
go into settings>preferences>audio>output modules>make sure 'advanced options' is checked, and change it from default to whatever sound software you're using (alsa, oss, etc.)
I donīt know. i just kept changing from one thing to other in the sound settings, and when i choose OSS i was able to hear sound. not with anything else. even ALSA was present there. it was the default choosen one.
What is ALSA?
Is it better than OSS?
If i want to use ALSA then what do i have to do?

Rep:
Alsa is the successor of OSS.
In my computer alsa work better than OSS.
If OSS is still work for you, it's OK but I think that when you upgrade you computer, it won't.
I don't use VLC indeed so I don't know if it support alsa but if you prefer alsa you can use mplayer or xine, they both well support alsa and have many codecs to play almost all type of media file
