virtualbox won't start - gconf error

Hi,

I just installed VB, but I cannot manage it starting.

uname -a output:

Code:
Linux waldrid 2.6.32-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jan 7 22:28:29 CET 2010 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5870 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
As told in the FAQ on virtualbox.org, I downloaded and run the amd64 version of VB version 3.1.2. (since I have a 64bit CPU) Install worked just fine, but when I'm trying to launch it, I get the following error message:

Code:
GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)
My gconf version is 2.28.0-1.

Any help would be appropriated. Thank you in advance.

A.

Hi -

As you know, VB provides a "virtual environment" in which you can run a "guest OS".

In this case, I believe the problem isn't with VirtualBox itself, but with the guest OS you're running on VB. Or more specifically, I believe the problem is with the Gnome "DBus" subsystem on the guest OS. VBox is an innocent bystander ;-)

One solution might be to try a different OS (VBox makes it easy to build one yourself).

Otherwise, you should be able to get far enough to fix the problem with the guest OS yourself. These links might help:

Installing gconf-defaults-service solved the problem.

Thanks again.
