Virtual/software video resolution in window manager?

Assume that I have a physical screen of 800x600, and i am running gnome 3. There is very little real estate.

Is there a way to 'zoom out' in gnome to where the screen 'looks like' it is running at 1024x768?

For example, press Ctrl - while in chrome to zoom out, but not change the physical resolution.

Hi,

seems possible. From the examples section of the xrandr man page:
Code:
Enables panning on a 1600x768 desktop while displaying 1024x768 mode on an output called VGA:
xrandr --fb 1600x768 --output VGA --mode 1024x768 --panning 1600x0
Edit: hmm, I see now you say "zoom out", where as panning is more like zooming in... maybe it's not what you want.

Cheers,

Evo2.
