Virtual Machine Software. Is it for me?

I want to buy a high end computer for gaming. I also want to use it for everything else and Linux will do most things I want to do. I would prefer to run linux but most games are made for windows and I don't want to have to reboot my computer just to play a game. I have also read that virtual machines are not good for gaming and emulators only work for some games. Is this correct and if so are there other options for me.

VMs like VMWare, Qemu, etc don't do any type of hardware acceleration so the only games you'll be able to play in them would be things like solitaire.

WINE or Cedega are options, but they can be a pain to get going sometimes.
