Vim/Gcc How To Install?

Vim/Gcc questions.

I am trying to install a new window manager Called UDE ( http://udeproject.sourceforge.net/index.shtml ). I have gotten nowhere. i recently found out that i can't install UDE (it stands for UNIX Desktop Environment) until i had a program called gcc installed. i found gcc and finally figured out what it was. however i can not install it due to some difficulties with a program called vim. i am also having trouble with vim as some of the install files to gcc & UDE won't open without me having these programs on my machine (I generally open all the read me or install titled files on new software as I read all those directions in order to figure out what I'm doing).

i did actually arrive at what i had believed was the correct way to install vim and got it going (i got what i did from the install & read me titled files in vim).

this is what i did (i have also tried the ./configure with similar results) and what i got. this is from my initial entry into the correct directory (according to the read me).

[necrosaber@localhost src]$ make
rm -f auto/config.status auto/config.cache config.log auto/config.log
rm -f auto/config.h auto/link.log auto/link.sed auto/config.mk
touch auto/config.h
cp config.mk.dist auto/config.mk
GUI_INC_LOC="" GUI_LIB_LOC="" \
CC="" CPPFLAGS="" CFLAGS="" \
LDFLAGS="" srcdir="." \
./configure \
\
\
\
\
\
\

creating cache auto/config.cache
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH
make: *** [config] Error 1

if i am understanding this correctly it is telling me that it can't complete this installation because there is no gcc or cc (i am assuming cc has something to do with gcc as goggling isn't showing cc). also i have a section called the Vim component configuration under my control center (mandrake 10 official, with the preferences menu turned on), there is a test button to see if it works. i click the test button and receive this message

Your Vim does not provide any GUI support. A GUI is required to use this component. Upgrade your Vim's version or install GVim/KVim.
Your Vim lacks the Eval feature; it is highly recommended to have this feature enabled. You may encounter problems without it.

anyone has any clue i totally appreciate the help i have been on this one for over a week now. Thanks

GCC is the GNU C Compiler. It is needed to compile programs, including itself. To get GCC, you will need to find an RPM from here, or from your distro CDs.
CC is the c compiler of UNIX, and on Linux will be a link to GCC.

Vim is a text editor. I suggest downloading and installing Vim from here. If you compile the latest version from source, it should have GUI support.

I hope this helps

There is an RPM package available on the site you linked to; I'm not sure why you're compiling from source in the first place. I also wonder if a Mandrake package might not be available on either the regular or Cooker repositories.

If you could use urpmi/RPMDrake to install the WM, it would then pull in and install the dependencies (which I presume are not present because you did not select the 'Development' group while installing).

It's always wise to use the distribution's tools for installation of software, if your distro has them-- and yours does. Certainly VIM and GCC should be installable from the CDs.
