video plugins for mozilla

i'm running latest ver. of kanotix on a thinkpad T22, 900mhz, 256mb ram. i'm using mozilla firefox browser. i've successfully installed mplayer, vlc, and a couple other viewers, including the win codecs for mplayer. the players all work well. as best as i can tell, i've installed all the plugins for mozilla for these programs. when i click on video links, when the link is directly to the file, the browser opens the video in a clean page and it plays fine. on the links where the video pane is embedded, like when the link to the video is not to the video file, but to an html file that plays the video in a small area on the web page, the area on the page just goes blank with the caption (no file) and nothing happens, even when the page is completely loaded. i'm still learning linux, i've checked the settings in the browser, all the video file extensions are enabled. i'm not sure what's wrong or how to fix it. in looking for similar problems on this site, i found one post that suggested installing helix. i did this, and installed the plugin, but it still doesn't work. ideas? thanks.

you have to install your plugin files in either .mozilla/plugins or the plugins directory of your firefox folder. Fox example to install the realplayer plugin, then just copy nphelix.so to one of the locations mentioned above( /usr/local/firefox/plugins in my case). To check if its installed enter about:plugins on the browser, and that should show you if the plugin is installed. Also see http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html

I have exactly the same problem. Everything worked fine with Firefox 1.0.7, but after installing 1.5b1 (which automagically updated to 1.5b2), the only videos or shockwave files that work are the ones that are not instructed to embed on the page. Mplayer still works fine. I even upgraded from 1.0pre5-3.3.2 to 1.0pre7. I upgraded from Mplayerplug-in 3.05 to 3.15. I saved my bookmarks, removed all extentions and themes, and blew away Firefox. Reinstalled Firefox 1.5b2. Even with a fresh install with no themes or extentions, embedded video still doesn't work.

I can crash Firefox without fail by going to http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/ice_age_2/ and clicking on "Large." Every time.

Here is my about: plugins page:

As you can see, everything is enabled, active and recognized except the default plug-in, libnullplugin.so is disabled (and I believe this is correct).

I suppose it could be a problem with the settings in mplayerplug-in.conf, but none of my changes seem to help (and this is after I "touch" the config file).

It surely seems that something in the new Firefox is screwed up.

This is simple mozilla issue. I installed Redhat 9.0, Mozilla WEB BROWSER worked fine only for a couple of days . Now the web browser window doesnot open. When clicked it waits in hour glass mode for a couple seconds and then dies.

But this is in Firefox, and it worked perfectly yesterday in Firefox 1.0.7. Now, today, in 1.5b2, it's all borked up.

No one else is having problems viewing embedded videos? If that's the case, could some one post their mplayerplug-in.conf file? Maybe I've got too many parameters off in there. Foo.

I found the problem with FX not showing embedded videos. A rookie mistake, actually. I neglected the first rule of FX troubleshooting: remove all extensions! The Fasterfox extention's default setting "Turbo Charged -- Maximum performance, exceeds RFC specs (increases load to web servers)" was causing the problem by abusing pipelining.

Removing the offending extension cleared it right up. All embedded (inline) videos play fine now. It was especially bad on atomfilms.com where it would tell me a plugin didn't exist, then, with Flash for example, I could click on Install plugin, atomfilms would show a Flash plugin test that then passed, and then start the loop all over again. Nothing on apple.com/trailers would play.

"Exceeds RFC specs," indeed! How bogus. I wouldn't think FX developers would condone a default setting in an extension that violated RFC rules, especially with the normal "Firefox is standards-compliant" mantra.
