Video playback problem

I have RedHat 9.0. I am having problme playing back video (dvd, vcd, avi, divx, etc) while logged in as a user. If I login as root. I get the video just fine. I've tried to chmod all the /dev/video* devices to rw (user,group,other) to no avail. It doesn't seem to matter what I use as a player (ogle, xine, mplayer, ...). Thanks for any and all ideas in advance!!

Try going into kuser or whatever your user manager is and adding groups to your user such as cdrom etc...

Try the following :

"cat /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq"

You'll probably notice that the RTC timer is on 64 or something. This can be increased for non-root processes becoming more 'responsive'.

Do the following :

"su -"
<enter your root password>
"echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq"

Log off as root an try MPlayer again with a normal user account.

(look at "cat /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq" to confirm if this worked).

If this was successfull you may want to put a line:

echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq

in your "/etc/rc.local" file, so that this value is set each time you reboot your computer.

ps.... more MPlayer tips can be found at the following URL : "http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/747/"

Good luck!
