Video file conversion tool

I'm looking for a tool to convert .gif to .swf.
I first looked for something that runs in Windows, but the only way I've been able to find so far involves a financial outlay.
I was wondering whether there is a tool in Linux that can handle this.
I have another computer running Mepis which I only really use to surf the web and for visitors to do the same, apart from using Gimp from time to time, so I'm not really up with what does what in the Linux software world.
Any comments or assistance invited.

I haven't tried it but you should check out http://www.swftools.org/ which seems to include a gif2swf utility, and it's released under the GPL.
