video distorted in mplayer

from a clean install of SW 9.1, compiled mplayer, no problems. when video file is played, sound comes through fine, video comes through, but distorted. i've checked the files on another box on the network to verify not corrupted, proper codecs. no errors are given. only a couple of colors come through, primarily green. the best comparison i can think of is when resolution is set incorrectly in X, you can make out shapes and movement, but as if the lines wrap around (like an improperly sized email does w/ text). i had the same problem w/ xine on this box w/ previous disto. anyways, here's the specifics:

v1.0pre3
SW 9.1 (as above) using KDE
trident cyberblade/i1 onboard videocard

if i left something out, let me know. thanks!

Mplayer probably tries to use a wrong video codec. I have seen this kind of behavior with windows media player. Have never encountered it with mplayer though. But if you have a standard installation (distribution), then some vital codecs may be missing due to copyright problems. Check www.mplayerhq.hu for complete codec list.

Mplayer stores it's codecs in /usr/local/lib/codecs/ . Copy codecs to that deirectory. If it doesn't help, recompile. Try different video output settings.
