Vi - retain position in file between invokations of vi

I've noticed that on some Linux systems if you start vi editor on some file, go to a line number, quit vi, then start vi on the same filename - it puts you back at the same line number. It "knows" your position from last time - how cool!

How is this done? so I can turn it on everywhere.
