vi not working properly in linux mint

my vi isnt working properly in my mint. when i press 'i' it doesn't shows insert written below and also i am not able to delete using backspace.What to do?

I have experienced similar problems to this in the past, and resolved it by installing vim

It probably uses the original vi, not Vim.

Try running "vim" explicitly in the command line. If it's not found, install it.

assuming vim works.

in bashrc, alias vi="vim"
