vga=791?

hi,
recently, i upgrade from kernel 2.4 to kernel 2.6. it is ok and no big problem. but, i cant make my console as 1024x786 as b4.
previously, i added vga=791 in grub as kernel parameter. however, the same parameter dont work in kernel 2.6. it complains that setting is not available!

i think this setting should work on diff. kernel version. what i can do now?

thanks,
jim

Did you compile your own kernel or did you grab a precompiled kernel?

Regarldess, the kernel you're running now doesn't have support for framebuffer, or frambuffer mode selection. The framebuffer is what gives your console the nice looking font, different sizes, color depth, etc. The linux kernel can be compiled with or without support for that, and yours probably does not have that enabled

vga=791? (part 2)

this is the part 2 of my previous question.

i updated from kernel 2.4 to kernel 2.6. however, due to wrong framebuffer setting, my console cant run 1024x768 mode with kernel parameter vga=791.

i have recompiled the kernel with setting up several framebuffer related parameters. but, it still dont work! so, would anyone give me more detailed hints on what parameters i need to set to make it work?

here is the parameter used in my .config. pls give me some idea! thanks!

Try vga=0x316 instead
Code:
    | 640x480  800x600  1024x768 1280x1024
----+-------------------------------------
256 |  0x301    0x303    0x305    0x307
32k |  0x310    0x313    0x316    0x319
64k |  0x311    0x314    0x317    0x31A
16M |  0x312    0x315    0x318    0x31B

Maybe you need to specify the driver with video=vesafb

Do you have the following parameters set:

CONFIG_VT=y
CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_HW_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FB_MODE_HELPERS=y
CONFIG_INPUT=y
