very quiet audio, why?

hey all,
I'm not sure if this is software or not but here goes,
My box does have auio output, if I crank the speakers. I checked KMix all he levels are up and I'm using the alsa drivers, so y is it so quiet? this is on a clean install acouple days ago and every thing else seems to be in working order.
The machine is linux mandrake 10.1, on an athlon 2000+ 256Mb Ti4200(128mg). the sound card is an VT8233 onbaord by VIA and runs snd-via82xx, The alsa driver.
It would be great if sombody could point out what I'm missing
Thanks, Dink

there are a number of mixer controlls involved

PCM, Wave, Master, and Tone controlls all enter into the mix at least for my card

yes crank up the pcm control.
Also try ticking in kmix under switches the "tone" .
Also check your balance settings.

ok thanks for the help,
heres the solution the VIA DXS slider was turned all the way down so I turned it up I was only worring about obvious ones like master volume and PCM.
Thanks again, Dink
