Verifying Archives

Hello all,
I am going to be creating some archives in .tar and .tgz, and was curious if there is a way to check the integrity of the archive to ensure that it is not corrupt. I have been looking for a bit on google and could not find anything about it. If not this way, is there a way to create a MD5SUM of the file? Thank you in advance.

Archivers like rar, afio, tar and zip have flags to verify archive contents. Gz has not, AFAIK.
