Ut2004 Runs Poor
I installed Gentoo 2005.0 on my AMD 3000+ with a Geforce 6600 GT PCIE and the game runs poor. When I open it it takes about a minute to put me into the menu and then when I join/start a game it takes 5 minutes minimum to start and then it runs poorly. I tried using the AMD64 native binaries but have began trying to use linux32 to run the game. I created the symlinks from libSDL and openal to the appropriate spots and I start the game by typing linux32 ut2004. Am I doing something wrong or what else could I try/do?

install the NVIDIA drivers
www.nvidia.com they help a lot MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS IN THE README ON HOW TO EDIT YOUR X-CONFIG FILE also, you could try a couple of other things, like changing the nice level when the game is called via the laucher or w/e change the command from /home/userX/ut2004/ut2004 to nice --adjustment=X /home/userX/ut2004/ut2004 |
nVidia drivers were one of the first things I installed after I had the system running and the nice --adjustment=x thing doesn't do a thing to improve the games performance.

you did change the X to a number, right? (lower = better)
also, are you sure that the system is using the nvidia driver? check /etc/X11/xorg.conf and see if your driver module is being loaded "nvidia" or just "nv" if it says "nv" change it to "nvidia" and restart X |
Yes I did change the X to a number and I am 100% sure it says nvidia instead of nv. I've installed those drivers numbers of times and I'm prettty sure I know how to do it.

sorry if I sounded rude there.... didn't mean to be
there's a lot of people who ask that question who don't know much... anyway, why are you invoking the executable with a linux32 ahead of it? [edit] nevermind that question, reread your post, makes sense hmmmm, I have a GeForce 6800 Ultra and my loading time is about the same in-game, try opening the console (~) and typing in "stat fps" see what your FPS is... if it's high, maybe you need to up the quality in the game control panel (have you done that yet??) if it's low, it's either something with the game or the system try invoking "glxgears" via the command line and see how many FPS you get if high but low in uT, something's up with the game itself if low, something's wrong with the system or the drivers |
I am using the linux32 command because I've read places that performance is better using the 32bit binaries rather then the 64bit ones. Under GLXgears I get roughly 7000 fps and within Unreal I get about 90 but it jump rapidly to around 20 which makes the game nearly unplayable. I believe it's something with the game itself but still havn't found a solution to my problem after about a week of looking.

try downgrading and/or turning off your anti-aliasing settings both in-game and the NVidia AA overrides via nvidia-settings command-line
I heard AA can do that to performance sometimes |
Still no difference in anything that I can tell. I have installed the game from both emerge and from the installer on the CD... No difference in either of them.
|
try turning the settings in-game all the way down on everything and see if it does it then
if not, slowly increase the settings until it does it again and that should help you find exactly what setting is causing it... if that is what's doing it |
No difference... Even the loading at the beginning takes forever... like before I get to the main menu. I ran memtest86 and it ran fine for 36 hours without an error. It's really getting bothersome...
