Using Wireless-Bridge As Wireless Adapter for Linux Desktop

2015-12-17

I've configured the http://168.192.1.201 webpage of a US Robotics wireless-g bridge according to the vendor's instructions and verified my setup. Now I would like to know what I should do next to make the bridge work as a wireless adapter for a Linux desktop.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Not sure I have a simple answer. http://support.usr.com/support/5430/5430-ug/five.html has the two modes you might be able to choose. There may be newer modes with some updates.

Basically the issue is how your system gets and uses two things. One is the IP/gateway address and the second is DNS ip addresses.

Sooo, we'd need to know the topology and the settings.

jefro,

Thanks for your helpful advice. When I try to use Manual setup for Ipv4 to enter the Broadband IP address, Submask, Gateway address and DNS serveraddresses, Network Manager does not save my entries. Since I've supplied all Security-related data to the USR bridge's webpage, I see no reason to bother with the 802.1x Security setup page. When I do select it, I can select MD5 and fill in Username and answer Password. But all that still makes no difference.

The only encouraging sign is that the bridge's Ethernet light is on and blinks. By the way, there are two entries on the MAC page. I enter the Ethernet card's hardware address in the Device MAC box but don't know what to do with the Cloned MAC box.

My reason for experimenting with this device is to find out if it performs better than my current IOgear wireless-n adapter in a room about 50' away from my router. I find that most wireless adapter don't cover such a long distance well.
