Did you try specifying it like mplayer vcd://1 /dev/<device>?

when i specify gmplayer vcd://1 it plays. In the prefernce menu of mplayer under misc whatevr cdrom device i mention it runs only that.
eg if i say CD ROM device =dev/cdrom it plays from dev/cdrom only and does not detect dev/cdrom1 and vice versa. Is it posiible to mention both cdrom and cdrom1 in the CD ROM device

Well, what would that achieve? Why not just put the VCD in the correct drive and play as usual? Not to mention you'd run into the possibility of having a VCD in both drives. Then how would it choose which one to play? It adds a lot of unecessary complexity. If, however, you're trying to run two VCDs at once you'll have to run two instances of (g)mplayer.
