Using the Logout option in KDE 3.5.4 causes a crash & black screen

Hi

Does anybody have a suggestion as to what is causing this problem and if possible a solution?

I'm just finishing off the setup on a laptop with a full install of Slackware 10.2, KDE upgraded to 3.5.4, Firefox & Thunderbird upgraded to latest versions. I'm using the bareacpi.i 2.4.31 kernel to give me enough power control to be able to shutdown from command line without needing to press the power button once the poweroff message comes up.

The laptop is a Dell 8100 with NVIDIA Geforce2 Go graphics which is working at a resolution of 1600*1200.

If I log in as root (Now that installation is virtually finished, hopefully, I won't need to log in as root anymore) and go into KDE, when I go to logout, the screen goes black, the mouse pointer stays on the screen and the battery control icon moves from the bottom right to the top left of the screen, apart from that, nothing else shows on the screen.

I can't get back to a terminal using the keyboard, the only way to physically restart/shutdown is to use the power button after waiting for the disk access light to go out, but I'd prefer to be able to shut down or logout properly.

If I log in normally as a user, I don't have a problem, I can logout of KDE to a prompt without any delay.

Has anybody come across a similar problem and been able to solve the problem (if it even is a problem) - looking at some other threads in the forum, I wondered whether it was a difficulty with ACPI trying to shutdown the machine & hanging in the background at the power off point (when I had the bare.i kernel installed, I'd have to press the power button to shutdown fully).

This was one thread I found with a similar sounding problem with version 3.3 of kde.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=309871

I've reinstalled the NVIDIA driver after the KDE upgrade in case that was the problem.

As a second query, would somebody be kind enough to let me know what changes I need to make to the sudoers file so that my normal user is able to use "shutdown -h now".

If I try it using sudo, I get the warning that user is not in the sudoers file & it will be reported. I have to use su & password to be able to shutdown as a user.

Thanks in advance.

I can't help you with the black screen problem, but the /etc/sudoers entry looks like this.

# John can run these commands without a password
John ALL=NOPASSWD:/sbin/shutdown (add the path to any additional commands you want as a comma-seperated list)

Thanks for that suggestion on the sudoers file, I'll try that tonight when I get home.

I tried a couple of suggestions I found on the board last night, but none worked, all I ended up with was that the shutdown command couldn't be found. I'll give this a go anyway.

Inclusion of the full path to the command executable is necessary for it to work.

Experimentation on my part has shown me that sudo won't work with any alias commands I've put into my root users .bashrc (e.g., short names for long command names).

Thanks bigrigdriver, adding "user ALL=NOPASSWD:/sbin/shutdown" to the sudoers file and then shutting down using "sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now" works for me now.
