Using spamassassin to full potential with Evolution

Hello, all. After a little (though probably not enough) evaluation time, I've settled on Evolution (v1.2.2, as packaged with Mandrake 9.1) as my mail client. Thanks to a link used as part of someone's posting signature (I can't remember who you are, but thanks nonetheless), I've learned how to pipe incoming messages to spamassassin. It works well, and catches a lot of spam, but every day brings ever-more-creative spellings and uses of punctuation that land more spam in my inbox. I've read the spamassassin docs on whitelisting, blacklisting, and "teaching" spamassassin what to kill and what to let live, but my problem is that I can't make head nor tail of how or where Evolution is storing my mail. Does Evolution use a standard UNIX(like) mail format that I can just feed through spamassassin as instructed, or should I consider using another client? Looking through the 'evolution' folder in my /home directory, I see some metadata and a big mbox file; I just have no idea what to make of any of it. Basically, spamassassin is static on my system with the stock filters in place, and I can't figure out how to teach it to catch more of the spam that Evolution is bringing in.

My goal is to use spamassassin's full functionality to filter my incoming mail; how that mail gets to me in the first place is of secondary concern. If it means ditching Evolution, so be it. I would even be comfortable with a console-based client if it meant that I could keep spamassassin on pace with my filtering needs. My understanding of Linux mail systems is rudimentary at best, so I would very much appreciate a gentle shove in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

I don't know evolution, but I use spamassassin a lot with DCC, pyzor and razor, and by upgrading everytime a new version comes out (using source tarballs) I get most of spam.
