using apt-get dist-upgrade for redhat

I'm trying to upgrade my redhat 7.1 system to redhat 9.0, mainly for the purpose of kde3.1 using apt-get. In my sources-list file, i had the following:

### For RedHat 9
## Core os and updates (required)
rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net/ redhat/9/i386 os updates
## Stable packages (required)
rpm ftp://apt.unl.edu/apt/ 9 kde3 kde3-extras

When i ran the dist-upgrade, it scarily announced that it would be removing 317 packages (compared to a small 44MB of ugraded/newly installed packages) among which were the kernel, apt, kde, and other vital packages. Why does apt seem to want to remove my system? What needs to be done to make this upgrade work?

How is it you set apt (I'm using synaptic) to update from RH8 to RH9?

in the sources.list file (as i posted above) i set the download source to a redhat 9 repository.

If all you really want is KDE 3.1, just go to kde-redhat.sourceforge.net . You can either download the packages yourself, or point apt to their servers.
